Call-Blocking Apps Exfiltrating Personal Information

The PDPC issued a bulletin to warn Hong Kong citizens of so-called ‘call-blocking’ apps that surreptitiously farm data from user phones. The apps in question were offered by companies registered outside Hong Kong (Israel, Sweden, and Mainland China), so the PDPC lacked the authority to pursue the offenders. However, the PDPC stated it will seek to strengthen cross-border and international cooperation with overseas personal data protection authorities to address similar matters in the future.
